Students` debate championship reaches national stage with 32 teams

Desk Report: The national tab round of the "36 July National Debate Competition 2026," organized by Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, was held in Gulshan, Dhaka, bringing together 32 of the country`s top debate teams in a competition aimed at promoting critical thinking and public speaking while reflecting on the legacy of the 2024 mass uprising.

The event, held on Friday, was arranged by the organization`s Central Debate Department. Teams that emerged as champions and runners-up from regional qualifying rounds across the country competed in the national tab round, marking a significant milestone in the tournament.

Organizers said the competition seeks to introduce younger generations to the ideals and historical significance of the 2024 student-led mass movement through constructive debate and intellectual engagement.

The national tab round was conducted by Abu Nasir Mohammad Twaha, Central Debate Secretary of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir. The programme was attended by the organization`s Secretary General, Sibgatullah, as the chief guest, while Central Publicity Secretary S. M. Farhad joined as the special guest.

The tournament follows the Bangla Asian Parliamentary Debate format, one of the most widely practiced parliamentary debate styles in Bangladesh. During the regional phase, the country was divided into 16 zones, with 16 teams from each region competing in knockout rounds.

Participants represented a diverse range of institutions, including public and private universities, medical colleges, undergraduate and postgraduate institutions, as well as district-based and independent debate clubs. After the regional contests concluded, the champion and runner-up from each of the 16 regions advanced to the national stage, resulting in a field of 32 teams.

Debate enthusiasts and organizers believe such competitions help students sharpen their analytical abilities, strengthen communication skills, and encourage informed discussions on issues of national importance. The participation of students from different educational backgrounds also highlights the growing popularity of competitive debating across Bangladesh.

The grand finale and closing ceremony are scheduled to be held on August 2, when the tournament champions and runners-up will be announced. In addition to team awards, organizers will recognize the Best Speaker, the Best Speaker of the Final, and the semifinalist teams.

Winning participants will receive cash prizes, commemorative crests, and certificates in recognition of their achievements.

The nationwide competition has attracted participants from across the country, reflecting the increasing role of debate as a platform for leadership development, civic awareness, and intellectual exchange among Bangladesh`s youth.
