Youth shot dead over gambling dispute

A young man was shot dead following a dispute over gambling at Sonargaon upazila in Narayanganj district on Saturday.

The victim Rakib Hossain, 25, succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital while undergoing treatment on Saturday afternoon.

According to local police and residents, one Ali Hossain`s residence in the upazila has been known as a hub for illegal gambling and drug activities. Rakib, a resident of Baliapara village in Araihazar upazila, was involved in gambling on Saturday morning.

At that time, accused Masud, a known criminal from Baliapara, went there and locked into an argument with Rakib over gambling debts. During the argument, Masud pulled out a pistol and shot the victim in the chest around 11.30am.

Rakib was rescued and taken to nearby Pakunda Community Clinic and then rushed taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the physicians declared him dead at 2pm.
Confirming the matter, Tatltala Police outpost in-charge Md Saiful Islam said the body has been kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy.

Procedures are underway to file a murder case in this regard, added the police official.
