A court in Dhaka on Thursday ordered to send former mayor of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Atiqul Islam to jail in three murder cases filed with Mohammadpur Police Station.
Metropolitan magistrate Mohammad Ali Hayder passed this order as police did not seek remand for him.
Around 8:30AM, the former mayor was produced before the court and, later, he was shown arrested in the cases.
Counsel of accused Morshed Hossain Shahin pleaded for his bail.
Earlier on Wednesday evening, police arrested Atiqul Islam from the DOHS area at Mohakhali in the capital.
Atiqul Islam was the mayor of the DNCC with the post of a cabinet minister. The interim government removed 12 city corporation mayor including Atiqul Islam through an order on August 19 last.
Atiqul Islam was elected as mayor as a candidate of Awami League for the first time contesting the by-election of of the DNCC held on February 28, 2019. He was elected as mayor again in the DNCC election held on February 1, 2020.
