Trials at 54 High Court benches from Sunday

Chief Justice Syed Refat Ahmed has constituted 54 benches to conduct trials of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court from Sunday (October 20).

The separate orders of the chief justice in this regard have been published on the Supreme Court website.

Last trials held at 53 benches on August 4 last. On the following day it was a general holiday, and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had left the country resigning from her post on that day. Since then the trials at the High Court Division have not been held for various reasons. At one stage, six Appellate Division judges led by former chief justice Obaidul Hasan resigned from their posts. Subsequently, a new chief justice was appointed.


Following the appointment of new chief justice, trial began at 8 benches of the High Court from August 12 last. On the following day, 9 benches were formed increasing another bench. Meantime, four High Court judges were taken appointed to the Appellate Division.

Then the chief justice constituted 51 benches to conduct the trials of the High Court division from August 18.

Subsequently, 23 judges were appointed to the High Court division. Of them, two were sent to the International Crimes Tribunal. Besides, 12 judges were appointed in the past have been refrained from judicial process in the wake of students` demand.
