Police have filed a case over an incident on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway in Munshiganj, where a driver continued to operate a bus even after its roof was blown off in an accident.
On Friday night, sub-inspector Ataur Rahman of Hasara Highway Police Station filed the case under the Road Transport Act. The unidentified driver, his assistant and the bus owner have been named as accused in the case.
Hasara Highway Police Station officer-in-charge Abdul Kader Jilani confirmed the matter.
He said the damaged bus has been seized and is currently at the police station. Efforts are underway to identify and arrest the accused. Authorities are also investigating whether the bus had a valid fitness certificate.
Meanwhile, except for one, all the injured passengers have returned home after receiving primary treatment. One injured passenger, Shahin from Jhalokathi, is currently under treatment at a hospital in Dhaka, but he is reported to be out of danger.
The incident occurred on Thursday night at Samashpur area under Srinagar in Munshiganj on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway. A passenger bus named Barishal Express collided with a covered van and a private car, causing the roof of the bus to be blown off. At least 20 passengers were injured in the incident.
Despite the roof being torn off, the driver continued driving the roofless bus for about 5 kilometers. He only stopped the vehicle after passengers screamed and agitated locals confronted him. The driver then fled the scene.
The injured were later rescued and taken to nearby hospital.
