3 killed as microbus hits parked truck in Meherpur

Three people were killed and three others injured after a microbus crashed into a parked truck on the Meherpur-Kushtia road in Gangni upazila of Meherpur district early Tuesday (May 7).

The deceased were identified as Jamal Uddin, 55, of Paschim Malshadaha village in Gangni; Shahinuzzaman, 28, of Garadob village under Gangni municipality; and his paternal aunt, Akhtar Banu, 45, from Meherpur Sadar upazila.

Police said the accident occurred around midnight near Shukurkandi village when a Kushtia-bound microbus, carrying seven passengers, rammed into a stationary truck on the roadside. All passengers sustained critical injuries in the crash.

Akhtar Banu died while being taken to Kushtia Medical College Hospital. Jamal Uddin, who was driving the vehicle, and Shahinuzzaman died early Tuesday while receiving treatment at the hospital.

The injured—Golapi Khatun, Fozila Khatun, and Alfatoon Nesha—remain under medical care.

According to Bani Israil, officer-in-charge of Gangni Police Station, the victims were en route to Kushtia Medical College Hospital to visit a relative undergoing treatment there.

The bodies of the deceased have been sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy, he added.
