The International Cricket Council (ICC) has warned Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) that security risks for the Bangladesh team could increase in India if pacer Mustafizur Rahman is included in the upcoming T20 World Cup squad, citing three key concerns.
Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Nazrul shared the information while speaking to media on Monday afternoon.
Asif Nazrul confirmed that the ICC’s security team sent an official letter to the BCB outlining potential threats to the national cricket team’s safety during the tournament in India.
According to the letter, the presence of Mustafizur Rahman in the squad, Bangladeshi supporters wearing national team jerseys, and the country’s upcoming national election could collectively heighten security risks. He said Bangladesh has been cautioned on these three issues.
The adviser also told that Bangladesh has already written to the ICC and is awaiting a formal response.
He added that Bangladesh had requested the matches be relocated to Sri Lanka or another neutral venue, but did not specifically ask for the games to be moved from Kolkata.
He made it clear that Bangladesh would not accept any plan by India or the ICC that ignores these concerns.
The youth and sports adviser said the letter effectively confirms that there is no suitable environment in India for Bangladesh to play the T20 World Cup under such conditions.
He stressed that Bangladesh would not consider playing a World Cup without its leading fast bowler and described the suggestion that fans should avoid wearing national jerseys as unrealistic and unreasonable.
Asif Nazrul said the security team’s position clearly shows that India is not a viable venue for Bangladesh’s World Cup matches. He added that expecting Bangladesh to drop its best bowler, restrict its supporters from wearing national colors, or delay a national election is absurd and unacceptable.
