Election Commissioner Brigadier General (Retd.) Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah has stated that government officials and employees are allowed to inform and raise awareness among the public about referendum, but they must not take any position in favor of or against “Yes” or “No” vote.
He made the remarks during a meeting with law enforcement and election observation teams in Patuakhali on Friday.
The meeting, chaired by Patuakhali Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dr. Mohammad Shahid Hossain Chowdhury, brought together the district law and order cell and the vigilance observation team to discuss preparations for the 13th parliamentary election and the 2026 referendum.
Speaking after the discussion, EC Sanallah said, “We have reviewed the EC’s directives with the law enforcement agencies and vigilance teams. Observing the overall law and order situation in Patuakhali, it appears the election will be conducted peacefully. We urge all voters to participate fully and exercise their voting rights. The Commission has made all necessary preparations for this.”
On election-related violence, he added, “Overall, the electoral environment in the country is better than in previous elections, though isolated incidents do occur. If these are avoided, the election can be conducted even more smoothly.”
He emphasized the need for restraint among supporters: “Competition is natural in elections, which can create tensions. However, provocative language and actions should be avoided. The Commission is monitoring these situations closely and does not want any unrest. The election will conclude on February 12, after which everyone must coexist peacefully in society.”
Regarding campaign materials, he clarified, “There is no ban on colourful billboards. However, the use of banners, festoons and handbills is prohibited, and coloured posters are completely forbidden.”
On the upcoming referendum, he said, “There are no new directives from the Commission. Only existing laws will apply. As in general elections, government officials cannot take sides but can raise awareness among the public.”
The meeting was attended by representatives from the Army, RAB, Police, district administration, executive officers of all eight upazilas and officials from various government departments.
