Meghna Alam suspends polls campaign
  Date : 30-01-2026

Meghna Alam, a parliamentary candidate for Dhaka-8 constituency, has announced a temporary suspension of her election campaign, citing persistent insecurity, harassment, and targeted threats.

As the sole female candidate in her constituency, Alam expressed deep frustration over the lack of government-provided security, despite repeated official assurances that all candidates would be protected by armed guards during the election period.

In a formal complaint, Alam detailed a coordinated effort to disrupt her campaign activities. She alleged that her female campaign workers are being targeted with laser lights intended to intimidate and humiliate them.

Despite multiple applications to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, and Election Commission, she claims she has been caught in a cycle of administrative finger-pointing with no actual security personnel assigned to her.

The situation has escalated beyond physical interference to severe digital abuse. Alam accused several political leaders of issuing public sexual threats against her on social media.

Furthermore, she leveled a serious allegation against the verified social media account of her rival, claiming it has been used to circulate AI-generated, obscene, and defamatory videos of her.

She noted that although she tagged responsible party leaders in these posts, no action or condemnation has followed.

Meghna Alam, an internationally certified political trainer and former Miss Bangladesh, stated that she chose to enter politics out of a sense of duty to reform the state and society rather than pursuing a comfortable life in the glamour industry.

She argued that being pushed into a "violent environment" without protection is not just an attack on her individually, but a broader assault on women`s political participation and the integrity of a free and fair election.
