Ex-Speaker shown arrested in attempted murder case

Former Speaker of the National Parliament, Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, has been shown arrested in a case filed over attempted murder and vandalism during an anti-discrimination movement in Lalbagh, Dhaka.

She was detained around 4:30 am on Tuesday (7 April) from a house on Road 8/A in Dhanmondi in the capital.

Additional Commissioner of the Detective Branch (DB) of police, Md Shafiqul Islam, said she has been shown arrested in a case filed with Lalbagh Police Station under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police over attempted murder and vandalism during the anti-discrimination movement.

The DB chief said there are several other cases against Shirin Sharmin, which are currently under investigation.

Deputy Commissioner (Media) of DMP, NM Nasiruddin, told reporters that Shirin Sharmin is being interrogated at the DB office. She will be produced before the court after interrogation.
