Hundreds of local residents blocked the Mirpur-10 intersection on Friday, demanding exemplary punishment for the rape and murder of seven-year-old schoolgirl Ramisa.
The protest began around 12:00 PM, causing significant traffic congestion in one of the capital`s busiest hubs. Protesters took to the streets to express their outrage over the brutal killing and called for a speedy trial of the perpetrators.
Mirpur Model Thana Officer-in-Charge Hafizur Rahman confirmed the demonstration, stating that while protesters occupied one side of the road, police managed to keep a single lane open for vehicle movement to minimize public suffering.
Ramisa, a second-grade student, went missing on Tuesday morning from near her home in Pallabi Section-11. Her body was later recovered from the apartment of a neighbor, identified as Sohel Rana.
According to police, the primary accused, Sohel Rana, confessed in court to raping and murdering the child before attempting to hide her body. He was arrested in Fatullah, Narayanganj, following the incident.
His wife, Swapna Akter, has also been arrested and sent to jail in connection with the case filed by the victim`s father.
