Kamrul Hasan: Former three-time Member of Parliament for Kushtia-4 (Kumarkhali-Khoksa) and a member of the BNP Chairperson`s Advisory Council, Mehedi Hasan Rumi, along with his wife and son, was injured in a road accident in the Jagir area of Manikganj on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway.
The two other injured victims were his wife and their 28-year-old son, Fayez Ahmed Rumi.
Following initial treatment, the seriously injured former MP was referred to Dhaka for advanced medical care.
The accident occurred on Friday (June 19) while Mehedi Hasan Rumi was travelling from Dhaka to his ancestral home in Kushtia with his wife and son in a private car. As they reached the Jagir area on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway, a passenger bus reportedly rammed into their vehicle (Dhaka Metro-Ga-14-6484), leaving the car extensively damaged and injuring all three occupants.
Local residents and BNP leaders and activists rushed to the scene immediately after the accident and rescued the injured before taking them to Manikganj Sadar Hospital. After providing primary treatment, the attending physicians referred Mehedi Hasan Rumi to Dhaka for specialized treatment, considering the severity of his injuries, including a fractured left arm. His wife and son are also receiving medical treatment.
Speaking about the incident, Mehedi Hasan Rumi said that they were travelling to Kushtia with family members when a passenger bus suddenly lost control and crashed into their private car, leaving all three of them injured.
Rafiquddin Bhuiyan Habu, a member of the convening committee and former organizing secretary of the Manikganj District BNP, said that immediately after receiving news of the accident, BNP leaders and activists, along with members of its affiliated organizations, rushed to the scene and participated in the rescue operation. They ensured the injured were taken to the hospital and received proper medical care. He also wished the injured a speedy recovery.
Among those present were former Manikganj District BNP Volunteer Affairs Secretary and Additional Public Prosecutor Advocate Shahiduzzaman Nazmul, District Jubo Volunteer Dal Convener Advocate Jinnah Khan, and leaders and activists of the BNP and its affiliated organizations.
The Dhaka-Aricha Highway, one of Bangladesh`s busiest highways, witnesses frequent road accidents. According to concerned observers, excessive speeding, reckless driving, and increasing traffic congestion are the major causes of such accidents.
They emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, greater driver awareness, and more effective monitoring to ensure road safety.
