A memorial event honoring children’s literature poet Jahannara Jani was held at the Poet Al Mahmud Corner of the Bangla Academy, featuring poetry recitation, spoken poetry performances, and recollections. The program began at 4:00 PM and, with the presence of literary figures, poets, reciters, and culture enthusiasts, the entire atmosphere became filled with memories and deep respect.
The event was chaired by Bangla Academy Award-winning children’s literature writer and poet Aslam Sani. Professor Niranjan Adhikari attended as the chief guest. The opening recitation was performed by noted reciter and Director of Bangla Academy Dr. Shahadat Hossain Nipu.
Special guests and distinguished speakers included Bangla Academy Director and multifaceted writer Tapan Bagchi, novelist Moni Haidar, puthi poet Hasina Momtaz, poet Abdul Gani Mia, senior poet Jalaluddin Noluya, poet Lutfar Jala, rhyme writer Yusuf Reza, principal poet Mohammad Khan, along with other prominent poets and recitation artists.
Speakers highlighted the literary works of the late poet Jahannara Jani and her contribution to children’s literature. They stated that her writings played an important role in the mental development and moral upbringing of children.
Family members present at the memorial included the poet’s life partner Md. Ab. Shukur, son ABM Jahid Sarwar Sohag, ASM Zakir Hossain, daughter Jannatul Ferdous Tonu, nephew and storyteller Shihab Shahidul, as well as other relatives. In addition, close literary associates and poets from various districts also attended.
A special moment of the program occurred when the chief guest handed over the proceeds from the sale of the poet’s books at the “Honesty Book Fair” held at Uttar Jatrabari Little Stars School to her grandson, child Jarif, which moved everyone present emotionally.
The event was hosted by poet Bappy Rahman and reciter Anwar Hasan Babu.
Notably, Ashok Dhar from Swadesh Bichitra magazine also spoke at the event, where he paid tribute to Jahannara Jani’s literary contributions, stating that her work in children’s literature would remain a guiding influence for future generations.
The memorial concluded with poetry readings and recitations in honor of the poet, leaving a deep impact on the hearts of the attending literary figures.
