INTERNATIONAL: China has emerged as a global model for green development and climate action, while playing an increasingly vital role in the world`s energy transition, according to Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat.

In an exclusive interview with China Media Group (CMG), Stiell shared his impressions of his recent visit to China and highlighted the country`s growing contribution to sustainable development and global climate governance.

Describing China as a country full of vitality, Stiell said that before arriving in Beijing, he had met with business leaders in Hong Kong and observed strong support for sustainable development. He noted that China`s long-term development strategy and achievements demonstrate the country`s firm commitment to pursuing the right path toward high-quality and sustainable growth.

Recalling his speech at Tsinghua University in May 2026, Stiell described China as a pioneer of climate multilateralism, saying its leadership is now more important than ever. He emphasized that the global transition toward clean energy is irreversible and that China is playing a central role in driving that transformation.

He praised China`s efforts to reduce carbon emissions, describing the country`s progress as remarkable and saying other nations could learn valuable lessons from its experience. Looking back at China`s development over the past decade, he said the speed and scale of the country`s transition toward a green, low-carbon economy have been extraordinary.

According to Stiell, China`s green transformation has not only created jobs but also generated new economic opportunities. More importantly, it has fostered continuous innovation, producing benefits that extend well beyond China`s borders.

He stressed that climate change is a common challenge facing all humanity and requires collective action. As a responsible major developing country, China has consistently upheld the principles of multilateralism, cooperation and win-win outcomes in addressing climate change.

Stiell noted that China has signed more than 50 South-South climate cooperation agreements with over 40 developing countries, providing practical support to help them strengthen their climate response and sustainable development efforts.

He also commended China`s leadership in multilateral climate cooperation, saying the country has not only advanced its own technological capabilities but has also supported other developing nations while demonstrating responsible global leadership.

"China has set an example for other countries," he said.

Stiell further praised the Chinese government`s strong leadership and practical measures in promoting green transformation. He said China has not only shared valuable experience in green development with the international community but has also expanded opportunities for countries around the world by driving the growth of global green markets and advancing technological innovation.
