Mijanur Rahman Akanda, Phulpur: Police have arrested a farmer in Phulpur, Mymensingh, in a case filed over a defaulted loan with Bangladesh Krishi Bank.

The arrested man was identified as Syed Ali, 43, a resident of Kharia Para village under Bhaitkandi Union of Phulpur upazila. Police arrested him late Sunday night.

According to case documents, Syed Ali has an outstanding loan of Tk 938,998 with the Phulpur branch of Bangladesh Krishi Bank.

The bank filed the case under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, after a cheque issued by the borrower against repayment of the loan was dishonoured.

Krishi Bank Phulpur branch manager Md Saidur Rahman said the bank had repeatedly urged the borrower to repay the outstanding amount, but he failed to settle the dues.

“As the outstanding loan remained unpaid despite repeated reminders, the bank filed the case,” he said.

The case was subsequently taken up by police, who arrested Syed Ali from the area on Sunday night.
