Dengue outbreak: 3 die, 492 hospitalised in 24-hours

Three more people have died and 492 new dengue cases were recorded across Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

DGHS shared the latest update through a press release issued on Monday (July 7), warning of continued public health concern as the country nears peak dengue season.

Among the newly hospitalized patients, the highest number—154—was reported from areas outside the Barishal City Corporation. Chattogram division (excluding the city corporation area) logged 51 new cases, while 69 were recorded in the Dhaka division (excluding the two city corporations).

In Dhaka North City Corporation, 36 people were admitted with dengue, and 53 more in Dhaka South City Corporation.

Elsewhere, 54 patients were hospitalized in the Khulna division (outside city corporation areas), 10 in Mymensingh, three in Rangpur, and one in the Sylhet division—all from outside city corporation jurisdictions.

In the past 24 hours, 411 dengue patients were discharged from hospitals. So far in 2024, a total of 11,409 patients have recovered after receiving hospital treatment.

As of July 7, the total number of dengue cases this year stands at 12,763, with 52.2% of the patients being male and 40.8% female.

The three most recent deaths were reported from Barishal, 2, and Khulna, 1, divisions. This raises the total dengue death toll in 2024 to 48, according to DGHS data.

Throughout 2023, Bangladesh saw a total of 1,705 dengue-related deaths and 321,179 hospital admissions, the highest on record.

In 2024, from January 1 to July 7, more than 12,000 cases have already been recorded.
