MM Rahmatullah: For many families confronting cancer, finding the right treatment can be almost as difficult as dealing with the disease itself. Questions about diagnosis, specialist opinions, treatment options, cost and where to seek care often arise at a time when patients are already under enormous emotional pressure.

Against this backdrop, Bangladesh-based SEOK Healthcare is seeking to strengthen a coordinated pathway for patients who require specialised cancer treatment overseas through its cooperation with Guangzhou Concord Cancer Center (GCCC) in China.

The initiative was highlighted at a press meet and hospital introduction programme held Sunday at Hotel Unique Regency in Dhaka, bringing together healthcare stakeholders, media representatives and others interested in international cancer treatment and cross-border medical cooperation.

Representatives of SEOK Healthcare and Guangzhou Concord Cancer Center — M.M. Masumuzzaman and Farhana Hasna Tuli from SEOK Healthcare, and EWAN You and Stephanie ZHOU from GCCC — were presented at the event as negotiators.

While advanced cancer technologies, including proton therapy, attracted significant attention, the broader significance of the initiative lies in how patients can be guided through the complicated process of seeking treatment abroad.

SEOK Healthcare says its role extends beyond simply referring a patient to a foreign hospital. Its model begins with medical information gathering and treatment coordination and can include specialist consultation, second opinions, referral management and practical assistance throughout the patient`s treatment journey.

For a cancer patient, the process may start with a virtual consultation and review of pathology reports, diagnostic images, laboratory results and previous treatment records. Where appropriate, the organisation can facilitate a second medical opinion before the patient makes a major treatment decision.

This approach is particularly important when patients are considering expensive or highly specialised procedures. A treatment may be technologically available at a particular hospital, but that does not necessarily mean it is suitable for every patient.

Clinical decisions should depend on factors such as cancer type, tumour location, disease stage, previous treatment and the patient`s overall health. Specialist assessment therefore remains central to determining the most appropriate treatment pathway.

The partnership with GCCC provides an additional referral option for Bangladeshi patients seeking specialised oncology services in China. The Guangzhou-based cancer centre offers surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy and advanced radiotherapy, alongside multidisciplinary cancer care.

One of its prominent areas is proton therapy, an advanced form of radiation treatment that can provide highly precise radiation delivery in selected cases. According to information supplied by GCCC, its proton therapy centre began clinical operations in December 2024 and is described by the hospital as the first operational proton therapy centre in South China. The hospital reported treating more than 800 patients by April 2026.

However, healthcare professionals emphasise that advanced technology should be considered as a clinical option, not as a universal solution. The suitability of proton therapy or any other treatment must be determined by qualified specialists after reviewing the patient`s medical condition.

The relationship between SEOK Healthcare and GCCC has developed over recent months. In March 2026, a Bangladeshi delegation involving SEOK Healthcare representatives and others visited the Guangzhou centre. Discussions covered precision oncology, international patient management, referral systems, insurance-related support and potential long-term cooperation.

GCCC later participated in the 17th Dhaka International Medical Equipment Exhibition in May, where it presented its proton therapy and precision-oncology capabilities.

SEOK Healthcare says it has served more than 4,000 patients over the past three years and is affiliated with more than 75 hospitals and institutions worldwide, with a network involving more than 1,000 physicians associated with internationally recognised institutions.

For patients travelling abroad, referral is only the beginning. Medical documentation, visa processing, travel, accommodation, interpretation, treatment coordination and follow-up care can all become significant challenges.

SEOK Healthcare says it assists patients across these stages, while GCCC says its international patient services include medical-record assessment, referral coordination, visa assistance, interpretation, treatment support and post-treatment follow-up.

Such coordination can be especially valuable for families who may otherwise have to navigate unfamiliar healthcare systems on their own.

Yet patients should approach overseas treatment decisions carefully. Before travelling, they should seek clear information about the proposed treatment, expected benefits, possible risks, treatment duration, total costs and follow-up arrangements after returning home.

The emerging SEOK Healthcare-GCCC relationship reflects a wider trend of healthcare cooperation between Bangladesh and China. For Bangladeshi patients, it may create another route to specialist opinions and advanced oncology services.

Ultimately, however, the success of such international cooperation should be judged not by sophisticated equipment or the number of hospital affiliations, but by whether patients receive appropriate medical advice, transparent treatment pathways, reasonable cost information and continuity of care.

For families facing cancer, a well-managed referral can mean more than an overseas hospital appointment. It can provide a structured pathway from medical records and specialist opinions to treatment coordination and follow-up — helping patients make difficult decisions with greater information, guidance and support.
