At least eight people including four children were killed as the car carrying them lost control and fell into a roadside canal at Nurani Gate area on Pirojpur-Nazirpur road at Sadar upazila under the country’s south-western district of Pirojpur at around 2:30 am on Thursday (10 October).
Four of the deceased were identified as Motahar, 45, his wife Sabina, 25, their daughter Mukta, 10, and son Shoeb, 2— of the same family. The other four were identified as Shaon Mridha, 32, his wife Amina, 30, their son Shahadat 10, and Abdullah, 3 — of the same family.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Pirojpur) Mukit Hasan Khan confirmed the matter to the media.
Confirming the matter, Talha bin Jasim, media cell officer of Fire Service, Pirojpur said that a private car lost control and fell then ditched into the roadside canal in Pirojpur`s Kadamtala market around 2 o`clock on Wednesday night, killing eight people including four children.
Talha also informed that the fire service received the information of the accident at 2:15 on Wednesday night and then, a unit of Pirojpur fire station reached the spot at around 2:30 am and started the rescue operation while another unit joined there after a few minutes. A total of eight bodies were recovered from the car and all occupants of the vehicle are believed to have died.
Additional Superintendent of Police Mukit Hasan said that the private car lost control and fell into the canal, killing all eight people in the car.
A national identity card of some people named Abdul Motaleb was found in the car. However, the information about where the private car came from and where it was going is yet to be confirmed. The corpses were kept at Pirojpur Sadar Hospital after the recovery.
