Police in a drive seized a truck loaded with approximately 10.5 tons of banned polythene at Ashulia in Savar upazila of the capital.
The drive was conducted on Tuesday morning at Nabinnagar bus stand area along the Dhaka-Aricha highway.
The seized plastic, packed in white bags, is valued at around Tk 22 lakh. The arrested individuals are truck driver Rabbi Hossain, 23, and his assistant Tamim Hossain, 22, both residents of Santahar at Adamdighi upazila in Bogura.
During preliminary interrogations, the arrested duo disclosed that they were transporting the illegal plastic from Babubazar in Dhaka to Haddi Patti area near Bogura Railway Station.
Acting on a tip-off regarding the illegal transport, Ashulia police set up a checkpoint at a three-way intersection on the Dhaka-Aricha highway. Upon searching the suspicious truck, they recovered a total of 10,672 kg of banned polythene, with an estimated market value of Tk 21,34,400.
Rabbi Hossain, the driver, informed the police that the plastic belonged to M/s Alam Traders located in the Babubazar area of Dhaka, and that the owner of the truck is Nazmul.
Ashulia Police Station officer-in-charge Md. Abu Bakar Siddique confirmed the information, adding that necessary legal actions are being taken against them.
