Bangladesh eyes historic Test series win against SA
  Date : 22-10-2024

Bangladesh sees a golden opportunity to secure their first-ever Test series victory against South Africa, given the visitors` poor record in the subcontinent. Although South Africa has never lost a Test match to Bangladesh, they have failed to win any Test series in the subcontinent over the last decade.

Historically, South Africa has dominated Bangladesh, winning 12 of the 14 Tests played between the two teams. However, in their last visit to Bangladesh in 2015, both Test matches ended in draws, largely due to inclement weather.

"It`s definitely a great opportunity. Bangladesh is traditionally very strong at home, so we have a real chance to win this series," said newly appointed Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons, speaking to local media for the first time.

While acknowledging South Africa`s subcontinent struggles, Simmons also warned against complacency, noting the Proteas` resilience. "South Africa will be motivated to break that record, and we can`t afford to underestimate them," he added.

The upcoming series marks Simmons` first assignment as Bangladesh`s interim head coach, following the departure of Chandika Hathurusingha. Hathurusingha was dismissed after allegations of player misconduct during the 2023 World Cup and exceeding his allotted leave time.

Simmons, who will lead the team through the Champions Trophy in 2025, is eager to make a strong start. "We have a crucial Test match coming up, and my focus is on preparing the squad. The last two days of training have been excellent, and we`re ready to aim for a place in the World Test Championship final," he remarked.

A former West Indies international, Simmons brings a wealth of coaching experience, having led teams such as Ireland, Afghanistan, and the West Indies to success. He was at the helm when the West Indies won the ICC World T20 in 2016 and has coached in several franchise leagues globally.

"All my past experiences, whether in Ireland, Afghanistan, or elsewhere, will help me guide the Bangladesh team. Overcoming language barriers and developing young talent are challenges I`m prepared for," Simmons said, adding that his main goal is to create a focused environment for the team as they prepare for the first Test.
