International Desk: Chinese and Canadian foreign ministers held an important meeting in Beijing on January 15 (Thursday), underscoring renewed diplomatic engagement between the two countries. Speaking at the meeting, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi noted that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has begun his official visit to China— the first by a Canadian prime minister in eight years— a visit that carries strong symbolic significance for bilateral relations.
Wang Yi stated that meetings between the leaders of the two countries are expected to take place during the visit, expressing hope that these high-level engagements will help shape a new future for China–Canada relations and provide fresh momentum for bilateral cooperation.
The Chinese foreign minister emphasized that China is willing to strengthen communication with Canada, build mutual trust, remove obstacles, and deepen cooperation. Such efforts, he said, would enable bilateral relations to move forward in a steady and constructive manner under the current global and regional circumstances.
Wang Yi further noted that China and Canada have different social systems, rooted in their distinct historical and cultural backgrounds and shaped by the choices of their respective peoples. He stressed that both sides should adopt a rational, friendly, and tolerant attitude toward each other, resolve differences on the basis of mutual respect, prioritize cooperative agendas, and actively convey positive messages. These steps, he said, would help build greater confidence in bilateral relations and jointly foster a new type of strategic partnership between China and Canada.
