China-Canada Relations Signal a Stable and Sustainable Future
  Date : 16-01-2026

International Desk: Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on January 16.

President Xi said that the sound and steady development of China–Canada relations serves the shared interests of both countries and contributes positively to global peace, stability, development, and prosperity. He emphasized that the two sides should work toward building a new type of strategic partnership and guide bilateral relations along a healthy, stable, and sustainable path, delivering greater benefits to the peoples of both nations.

To advance bilateral relations, President Xi put forward four key proposals.
First, the two countries should be partners based on mutual respect. Despite differences in national conditions, China and Canada should respect each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Second, they should be partners in shared development. The essence of China–Canada relations lies in mutual benefit and win-win cooperation. China’s high-quality development and continued opening-up will create sustained new opportunities for bilateral cooperation.

Third, the two sides should be trusted partners, strengthening exchanges and cooperation in education, culture, tourism, sports, and people-to-people interactions across all sectors of society.

Fourth, they should be cooperative partners. China stands ready to enhance exchanges and cooperation with Canada within frameworks such as the United Nations, the G20, and APEC, and to work together in addressing global challenges.

Prime Minister Carney said that Canada is willing to build a strong, sustainable new type of strategic partnership with China to deliver greater benefits to the people. He noted that under President Xi Jinping’s leadership, China’s economy has grown rapidly and achieved remarkable breakthroughs in scientific and technological innovation, injecting strong momentum into global economic growth. He reaffirmed that Canada adheres to the one-China policy and expressed Canada’s willingness to strengthen cooperation with China in areas including trade, energy, agriculture, finance, education, and climate change.

Carney also described President Xi’s Global Governance Initiative as highly significant, adding that Canada is prepared to deepen multilateral coordination with China, uphold multilateralism, and work jointly to safeguard world peace and stability.
