Marine Biodiversity Treaty Enters into Force, Welcomed by China
  Date : 21-01-2026

International Desk: Beijing has welcomed the entry into force of the Marine Biodiversity Treaty, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a regular press briefing on Tuesday, January 20.

The spokesperson noted that 82 countries, including China and the European Union (EU), have signed the treaty, which has now officially come into effect. China, he said, warmly welcomes its implementation.

Guo described the Marine Biodiversity Treaty as a landmark international agreement concluded under the framework of the United Nations. He said the treaty marks the beginning of a new chapter in global ocean governance and represents a major victory for multilateralism.

He added that China stands ready to strengthen communication and cooperation with all parties to ensure the treaty’s full, accurate, and effective implementation, and to make greater contributions to advancing global ocean governance and safeguarding international maritime order.

The spokesperson further said that, in order to serve the common interests of the international community, China has decided to apply to host the treaty’s secretariat in Xiamen and has informed the UN Secretary-General of the decision.

Known as a “garden city by the sea,” Xiamen boasts a long history, a beautiful and livable environment, and an open and inclusive atmosphere. The city is internationally renowned for its fertile ground for innovation and its thriving blue economy.
