Election Commissioner Brigadier General (retd) Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah on Sunday warned officials who are on-duties during polls that any proven biasness or partiality during the election process would lead to severe consequences.
Emphasising transparency and neutrality, he said the Election Commission has taken — and will continue to take — a firm stance against any form of misconduct.
Speaking at a meeting with law enforcement agencies, vigilance teams and observation teams in Barishal ahead of 13th National Parliamentary Election and referendum, Sanaullah told law enforcers that all election activities must be conducted openly, without secrecy or favouritism.
“Our personal interests are limited only to our right to vote as citizens; nowhere else,” he said. “When working professionally, duties must be carried out with 100 percent responsibility. There is no distinction between small or big parties, heavyweight or lightweight candidates. Everyone must be treated equally in the application of the law.”
He further cautioned officials that failure to rise above personal preferences, despite clear instructions, would not be tolerated.
“If biasness is proven, the consequences will be very serious. The Election Commission will be extremely strict in this regard,” he warned.
Addressing members of the law enforcement agencies, the Election Commissioner urged them to perform their duties firmly but wisely.
“You must be resolute. If you are firm, no one will take advantage. However, it should not be only about the use of force; a balanced approach is necessary,” he said.
Sanaullah also said there would be no scope for manipulation in the expatriate voting process. He noted that live verification has been made mandatory during voting and that intelligence agencies will be responsible for ensuring ballot security.
The meeting was chaired by Returning Officer Khairul Alam Suman. Barishal District Police Superintendent Farzana Islam and other senior officials were also present.
