A court has imposed a travel ban on Mohammad Azaz, administrator of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), over allegations of abuse of power, corruption, irregularities and bribery.
On Sunday (February 1), Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Foyez passed this order following an application filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
ACC prosecutor Delwar Jahan Rumi confirmed the matter.
The ACC’s Assistant Director Md Ashiqur Rahman submitted the petition, stating that multiple allegations againstAzazare under investigation. These include irregularities related to the leasing of Mirpur Gabtoli cattle markets, the e-rickshaw project, control of Borak Tower (Hotel Sheraton), allocation of shops at Banani kitchen market, construction and allocation of shops at Khilgaon Taltola Super Market parking area, city corporation van services, allocation of footpath shops and other DNCC-related matters.
The petition further noted that despite being served notices under relevant provisions of the ACC Act and Criminal Procedure Code,Azazfailed to appear before the commission. According to reliable sources, there is concern that he may attempt to flee the country.
The travel ban was imposed to ensure a proper investigation into the allegations.
