Xi–Trump Talks Could Send Message of Stability in an Uncertain World
  Date : 13-05-2026

International Desk: A major diplomatic event scheduled to take place in Beijing in mid-May has drawn widespread global attention. At the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, U.S. President Donald Trump will pay a state visit to China from May 13 to 15. The visit will mark the first face-to-face meeting between the leaders of China and the United States since their meeting in Busan last October, as well as the first visit to China by a sitting U.S. president in nine years.

During the visit, President Xi and President Trump are expected to hold in-depth discussions on China–U.S. relations and major issues concerning global peace and development. Ahead of the trip, President Trump said on social media that he was looking forward to the upcoming visit to China with great anticipation.

As one of the world’s most consequential bilateral relationships, the state of China–U.S. ties directly affects global stability. The international community widely expects that the meeting between the two leaders will help steer the “giant ship” of China–U.S. relations steadily forward, encourage both countries to become genuine partners and friends, and contribute to greater global stability.

Head-of-state diplomacy has long served as the “anchor” of China–U.S. relations. Since Donald Trump’s return to the presidency, the leaders of the two countries have held seven significant rounds of engagement, helping to maintain overall stability in bilateral ties. Against a backdrop of a complex and rapidly changing international environment, the upcoming Xi–Trump meeting is being viewed as an important signal of stability for the world.

One of the most critical factors in ensuring the smooth course of the China–U.S. relationship remains the proper handling of the Taiwan issue. It is regarded as the most important and sensitive issue in bilateral relations, as well as the greatest source of risk. Beijing maintains that Taiwan is part of China’s territory and that safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity is non-negotiable. The United States, according to the Chinese position, should approach arms sales to Taiwan with extreme caution.

As the world’s two largest economies, China and the United States together account for more than one-third of global economic output and nearly one-fifth of global trade in goods. The international community hopes that economic and trade cooperation will continue to serve as both the foundation and driving force of China–U.S. relations, helping to inject certainty into the global economy.

Since 2025, under the strategic guidance of the two heads of state, China and the United States have conducted several rounds of high-level economic and trade talks, producing a series of positive outcomes. In January this year, a survey released by the American Chamber of Commerce in China showed that nearly 60 percent of U.S. companies plan to increase investment in China. According to U.S. media reports, many senior executives from major American companies are expected to accompany President Trump during the visit.

Observers hope that both countries will approach each other with a more positive outlook, narrow differences, expand cooperation and contribute to stabilizing the world economy.

The responsibility of a major power lies in its ability to shoulder global responsibilities. At a time of ongoing geopolitical conflicts, growing artificial intelligence security risks, intensifying climate challenges and mounting pressure on global energy supply systems, the international community hopes that China and the United States will work together to deliver more meaningful, practical and…
