Special Correspondent: The chairman of People`s Rights Party (PRP), symbol of justice, revolutionary leader Sarder Md. Abdus Sattar, has called for the abolition of the country`s existing legal and judicial framework, arguing that it is rooted in colonial-era laws and has failed to ensure justice and public safety.
Speaking at a human chain organized by the party in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka, Abdus Sattar demanded the implementation of a judicial system based on Islamic principles and the provisions of the Holy Quran.
In his address, the PRP chief alleged that the current judicial system is ineffective and vulnerable to political influence. He claimed that legal outcomes in high-profile cases often change depending on an individual`s political position and authority, which, he said, undermines public confidence in the rule of law.
Abdus Sattar expressed concern over incidents of rape, murder, abduction, and violence against women and children. Citing statistics from Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) and Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), he said the country has witnessed a worrying number of crimes against women and children in recent months. He argued that lengthy judicial procedures, weak enforcement of laws, and a culture of impunity have contributed to the rise in such crimes.
According to him, social and cultural degradation, drug abuse, exposure to harmful online content, and a decline in moral education are among the factors driving the deterioration of law and order.
The PRP chairman further alleged that ordinary citizens do not feel secure, while criminals often evade accountability. He questioned the effectiveness of the existing legal framework and expressed skepticism about the implementation of capital punishment in serious criminal cases.
Referring to Islamic teachings, Abdus Sattar said that justice should be administered in accordance with divine guidance. He urged the government to replace what he described as a colonial legal structure with a judicial system based on Islamic law and called for strict punishment of rapists and murderers.
The human chain was addressed by Advocate Md. Alamgir, Chairman of the Bangladesh Democratic Party; Md. Delwar Hossain, Chairman of the Bangladesh Mukti Party; Md. Robiul Awal, Chairman of the Bangladesh Ekushey Party; Md. Abul Hashem, Chairman of the Bangladesh Sarbojanin Alliance; Md. Sabbir Khan, Vice Chairman of the Gonoodhikar Party; Haji Md. Tarikul Islam, Joint Secretary General; and Md. Mobarak Hossain, Joint Organizing Secretary.
The human chain concluded with a demand for comprehensive judicial reforms and the establishment of what the party described as a fair and effective justice system based on Islamic principles.
