A Discussion on the Lives and Literary Works of Poland’s Nobel Laureate Authors
  Date : 07-11-2026

Moin Mahmood : A special literary discussion titled "Nobel Laureates of Poland" was held in Dhaka with the aim of strengthening the existing friendly relations between Bangladesh and Poland, expanding mutual cultural exchange, and introducing Bangladeshi readers and literature enthusiasts to Poland’s rich literary heritage.

Organized as part of the "Polish Culture in Bangladesh" initiative, the event—held on the morning of Saturday, November 7—explored the lives, literary works, creative philosophies, and significant contributions to world literature of five Polish Nobel laureate authors.
The event was graced by H.E. Dr. Piotr Antoni Świtalski, Ambassador of Poland to India, who attended as the chief guest. In his address, he emphasized the importance of fostering mutual understanding and cultural ties between the peoples of the two nations through literature and the arts.

Małgorzata Wejsis, Director of the Polish Institute in New Delhi, also attended the event as a special guest.
The program began with a welcome address by poet and translator of Polish literature, Annonto Uzzul, who outlined the goals and objectives of the initiative.

Md. Mohin Uddin Mizan discussed the life and literary works of Henryk Sienkiewicz, the Polish novelist who received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1905. Meanwhile, Tanzida Israt Jahan Ritu spoke about the literary contributions of Władysław Reymont, the novelist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1924. Asif Rahman Saikat presented the literary philosophy and creative works of Czesław Miłosz, the poet and essayist who received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1980. Soumendra Goswami discussed the poetry and literary vision of Wisława Szymborska, the poet and 1996 Nobel laureate in Literature. Additionally, Umme Rumman Usha explored the life, literary contributions, and creative characteristics of Olga Tokarczuk, a contemporary Polish fiction writer and recipient of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Literature.
The speakers highlighted various facets of Poland’s literary tradition, examining how these authors addressed themes such as history, national identity, human values, independent thought, individual subjectivity, social reality, and the multifaceted experiences of human life. The discussion also underscored the contributions of Polish writers to world literature, as well as the potential for translating and engaging with their works in the Bengali language.

Following the main literary discussion, the renowned actor, playwright, and translator Khairul Alam Sabuj offered concluding assessments and reflections.
In the subsequent segment, an open discussion and Q&A session took place, featuring Małgorzata Wejsis, Director of the Polish Institute in New Delhi. This session focused on Polish literature, the practice of translation, cultural cooperation, and the various possibilities for literary exchange between Bangladesh and Poland.

The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered on behalf of the Honorary Consulate of Poland in Dhaka.
Throughout the event, literature was highlighted as a vital medium for fostering mutual respect, cultural harmony, and intellectual engagement between the people of the two nations. At the same time, emphasis was placed on making the works of Poland’s Nobel laureate authors more widely known to readers in Bangladesh, as well as on expanding the scope of literary and cultural cooperation between the two nations.
The organizers expressed hope that such literature-oriented initiatives would further invigorate the existing cultural ties between Bangladesh and Poland, and create new possibilities for mutual collaboration in the fields of literature, translation, and creative endeavors.
