Vatican wants interfaith talks with Bangladeshi ulema
  Date : 17-09-2024

The Vatican envoy in Dhaka has proposed an interfaith dialogue between Bangladeshi Islamic scholars and a delegation of Catholic scholars from the Holy See`s Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue.

He also emphasised the need for increased support for the over one million Rohingya refugees living in camps in southeastern Bangladesh.

Kevin S Randell, the Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See to Bangladesh, came up with proposal while meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the state guesthouse Jamuna on Monday.

Their discussion covered key issues including religious minorities in Bangladesh, interfaith dialogue, Rohingya humanitarian efforts, and Prof Yunus` upcoming speech at the UN General Assembly later this month.

Prof. Yunus highlighted the interim government`s focus on improving law and order, noting that security has significantly improved since his administration began. He also mentioned the government`s recent reform efforts and sought the Holy See`s support for Bangladesh`s reforms and the Rohingya crisis.

Lamiya Morshed, Senior Secretary for SDG Affairs, and Kazi Russel Pervez, Director General of the Foreign Ministry, were also present at the meeting.
