Special Correspondent: Khelafat Majlis has expressed deep concern over the current state of law and order in Bangladesh, criticizing the government’s response to border killings, rising crime, and administrative irregularities.
At a meeting of its central executive committee held yesterday at 7:00 PM at the party’s central office in Paltan, leaders said the Border Security Force of India is repeatedly violating international law and human rights by shooting and killing Bangladeshi citizens along the border.
The party alleged that India is also attempting to push Indian Bengali-speaking Muslims into Bangladesh through the Assam and West Bengal borders. “We strongly condemn and protest India’s hegemonic behavior and human rights violations,” the leaders said in a statement.
They further expressed frustration that although three Bangladeshi citizens were killed at the Bhairabia and Lalmonirhat borders in the past week, the Bangladesh foreign ministry has yet to summon the Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka for an explanation. The party demanded the government take immediate and effective measures on the issue.
Rising Crime and Public Hardship: The meeting noted that incidents of murder, drug trafficking, obscenity, juvenile gangs, and mugging are increasing across the country. Leaders also pointed to rising prices of essential commodities and allegations of irregularities and extortion in the leasing of sacrificial animal markets ahead of Eid-ul-Adha.
“In this situation, the response of law enforcement agencies is disappointing,” the statement read.
Flood Preparedness and River Projects: Khelafat Majlis urged the government to expedite the construction, repair, and dredging of embankments and canals in flood-prone areas such as Feni, Sylhet, and Rangpur before the monsoon season. It also called for immediate implementation of the master plan to construct barrages on the Padma and Teesta Rivers, saying the project must be carried out at any cost.
Constitutional Reform and Justice Demands: The party said the government must act sincerely to reform the constitution in line with the outcome of the referendum. It reminded the BNP that it was able to form the government due to the sacrifices of thousands of martyrs and injured during the July uprising, warning that failure to honor that mandate would brand it as politically dishonest and a violator of promises.
Leaders demanded that investigations and trials related to the July killings and other homicides be expedited by increasing manpower in tribunals and courts. They also called for steps to bring back fugitive convicts, including Sheikh Hasina, and execute the court verdicts.
The meeting was presided over by Ameer-e-Majlis Maulana Abdul Basit Azad and conducted by Secretary General Dr. Ahmad Abdul Qader. Among those present were Naib-e-Ameer Maulana Ahmad Ali Qasemi, Joint Secretaries Advocate Jahangir Hossain, Muhammad Muntasir Ali, Dr. Mostafizur Rahman Faisal, Prof. Abdul Jalil, Organizing Secretary Prof. Kazi Minhajul Alam, Publicity Secretary Engineer Abdul Hafiz Khasru, and other senior leaders.
