Sylhet Correspondent: A young man was allegedly hacked to death in Sylhet’s Beanibazar upazila in (5th September) Saturday night by assailants who had come looking for his elder brother. The incident took place in Uttar Akakhazana village between 11:30 pm and midnight.
The deceased, Hasan Ahmed, 20, was the son of Abdul Basit from the same village.
According to police and family sources, a group of three to four individuals arrived at the house seeking Hasan`s elder brother, Hanif Ahmed. The family claimed the perpetrators were looking for Hanif due to his previous involvement in Awami League politics. Hasan was asleep at the time, and his parents were not inside the house.
Local sources report that the attackers cut through the steel window grille to break into the residence. They woke Hasan up and demanded to know his brother’s whereabouts. When Hasan stated he did not know, the assailants searched the house and forced him to call his father, who also failed to provide information on Hanif`s location.
Frustrated by their failure to locate the elder brother, the attackers hacked Hasan with sharp weapons before fleeing, leaving him critically injured. He was rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
The family alleges the killing was a deliberate act of retaliation by the assailants for failing to find Hanif.
Beanibazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abu Jafor Mohammad Mahfuzul Kabir said, "Police visited the scene upon receiving the information, and an inquest report has been prepared. A drive is underway to identify and arrest the culprits. Legal action will be initiated once we receive a written complaint.
