Tokyo`s Nikkei 225 index closed down 4.05% on Monday as investors reacted nervously to upcoming US tariffs announced by President Donald Trump.
The benchmark index fell by 1,502.77 points to 35,617.56, marking its lowest level since September.
The broader Topix index also saw a significant decline, dropping 3.57% or 98.52 points to close at 2,658.73.
Market uncertainty over the economic impact of the tariffs contributed to the sell-off, reflecting growing concerns among investors.
