Padma Barrage under Tarique Rahman’s Visionary Leadership: A New Chapter of Development and National Dignity

Zubeyea Binte Kabir

There are moments in the history of a nation when a state decision transcends the boundaries of an ordinary development project and becomes the answer to decades of deprivation, struggle, and collective aspiration. The Padma Barrage Project is such a historic commitment one that represents not only a new chapter in river and water management, but also a grand national initiative aimed at protecting the lives, livelihoods, and future of millions in the southwestern region of Bangladesh. For decades, the people of this region have endured water scarcity, river erosion, salinity intrusion, and agricultural crises caused largely by the impacts of the Farakka Barrage. Today, the government has finally taken a courageous step toward realizing a long-cherished dream. Under the visionary leadership of the widely admired Prime Minister and statesman Tarique Rahman, the approval of this mega project worth nearly Tk 34,500 crore marks a new milestone in Bangladesh’s development history. This is not merely an initiative to construct a barrage; it is a commitment to revive dying rivers, save agriculture, protect the fragile ecosystem of the Sundarbans, and build a sustainable Bangladesh for future generations. History ultimately remembers those leaders who feel the pain of the people as their own responsibility. The Padma Barrage Project stands as a bold and farsighted reflection of such leadership.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s Visionary : Leadership : The true identity of a statesman is revealed not in times of comfort, but in moments of crisis and in the courage to solve them. For years, the Padma Barrage Project remained discussed, debated, and delayed. It is Prime Minister Tarique Rahman who demonstrated the determination to finally implement it. Before the election, he promised this project at a public rally in Rajshahi, and upon assuming office, he moved decisively toward fulfilling that promise. This has become a shining example of political sincerity and visionary leadership. Today, the people of southern Bangladesh are beginning to believe once again that politics is not merely the language of power it can also be the language of transforming human lives.

The Wound of Farakka and Bangladesh’s Long Sigh : Since the construction of India’s Farakka Barrage in 1975, southwestern Bangladesh has gradually lost its rivers, vitality, and ecological balance. The Padma has weakened, navigability in rivers has declined, agricultural lands have become saline, and people have suffered severe shortages of fresh water. Historic rivers such as the Hisna-Mathabhanga, Gorai-Madhumati, Chandana-Barasia, Baral, and Ichamati now stand on the verge of extinction. The Padma Barrage Project is an answer to that long suffering—a symbol of Bangladesh’s dignity against decades of neglect and deprivation.

Why the Padma Barrage Was Necessary : The lifeblood of a riverine nation lies in the flow of its waters. When rivers die, agriculture dies; the environment dies; the economy suffers. The core objective of the Padma Barrage is to conserve water after the monsoon season and distribute it in a regulated manner during the dry months to the rivers of southwestern and northwestern Bangladesh. Through this initiative, irrigation for agriculture will be ensured, freshwater flow to the Sundarbans will increase, salinity will decrease, and dying rivers will regain life.

Magnitude and Infrastructure Grandeur of the Project : A 2.1-kilometer-long barrage will be constructed at the Pangsha point in Rajbari. The structure will include 78 spillway gates, 18 under sluices, two fish passes, a navigation lock, and a railway bridge over the barrage. This is not just a dam; it is a m…
