International Desk: China Global Television Network (CGTN) of China Media Group (CMG) recently conducted an exclusive interview in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, with Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the newly appointed Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC). This marked his first exclusive media interview since assuming office.
During the interview, Youssouf stated that China is Africa’s true friend, noting that when many other countries were reluctant to support Africa’s infrastructure development and key sectors, China stepped forward with concrete assistance. He firmly rejected various allegations raised against China–Africa cooperation.
Reaffirming the African Union’s steadfast commitment to the One-China principle, Youssouf emphasized that relations between Africa and China are built on shared interests, mutual respect and mutual understanding. He noted that Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative and the Global Governance Initiative are well aligned with the interests of African countries, and that Africa has established a sound framework for cooperation with China.
He further stated that for many years Africa and China have deepened cooperation in infrastructure development, including roads, railways, ports and logistics. Building on this foundation, the two sides have expanded collaboration in energy resources and power grid construction. At present, greater emphasis is being placed on cultural exchanges. In addition, Africa seeks to learn from China’s successful development experience so that millions of Africans can be lifted out of poverty.
Youssouf noted that President Xi Jinping has designated 2026 as the “China–Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges.” Strengthening bonds between the Chinese and African peoples, he said, is vital for both survival and development. Africa therefore warmly welcomes this initiative.
He also pointed out that Africa’s more than 50 countries represent a significant advantage. If these nations can unite and speak with one voice, the continent will exert a profound influence on global decision-making. Africa is working with reliable partners such as China to ensure that the world hears Africa’s voice and takes its aspirations and needs seriously.
