The government has rolled out the Government Employees (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, introducing strict provisions for dismissal over four specific offenses, sparking concern among secretariat officials and employees.

Issued by the President on Sunday evening, the ordinance follows its approval by the Advisory Council on Thursday, despite ongoing protests from government workers.

The ordinance outlines four offenses that constitute misconduct: inciting disobedience or disrupting discipline among employees; being absent or neglecting duties without leave or valid reason, whether individually or collectively; encouraging others to skip work or shirk responsibilities; and obstructing colleagues from performing their duties.

Offenders face penalties ranging from demotion to a lower rank or pay grade to outright removal or dismissal from service.

The ordinance’s approval by the council of advisers last Thursday triggered immediate protests from secretariat officials and employees, who fear the new rules could threaten job security or be applied unfairly.

Despite the unrest, the government moved swiftly to formalise the ordinance, signalling a firm stance on enforcing discipline within its ranks.

Leaders of various political parties have expressed unanimous support for Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus and his commitment to holding elections by June 30, 2026, said the Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.

The discussions focused on the interim government’s progress on reforms, justice, and election preparations, with parties pledging to stand by the government’s efforts, he said while briefing media outside state guest house Jamuna.

Shafiqul highlighted the strong backing for Yunus’ leadership, noting that party leaders voiced support for the interim government’s work on reforms, justice, and election preparations.

“They will stand with the government,” he said, emphasising the collaborative spirit of the Sunday meeting at Jamuna. The discussions underscored steady progress toward a democratic transition, with elections firmly targeted within the December 2025–June 2026 window.

Addressing reporters’ questions about the election roadmap, Shafiqul iterated Yunus’s commitment. “The Chief Adviser has set a clear deadline—elections by June 30, 2026. He’s a man of his word, and everyone is satisfied with this,” he said.

Shafiqul stressed that a detailed roadmap and schedule would be announced closer to the timeline, urging trust in Yunus’s leadership.

Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus has no intention of extending his interim government’s tenure and is committed to holding elections by April 2026 at the latest, according to Nagarik Oikya President Mahmudur Rahman Manna.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with Yunus at Jamuna on Sunday, Manna emphasized the need for deeper dialogue with political parties to ensure a fair and impartial election.

Manna revealed that Yunus expressed concern that his efforts could fail without broad political consensus. “We told him to talk more with parties, exchange views, and share how he plans to conduct the elections,” Manna said. He stressed that clear communication on election plans and necessary reforms is critical to avoid delays, noting Yunus’s assurance that elections will not be postponed beyond April 2026.

Manna clarified Nagarik Oikya’s stance: “We’re not focused on reforms; we just want a fair and impartial election.” He acknowledged that delays in reforms could push back the timeline but expressed confidence in Yunus’s commitment to keeping the process on track.

Yunus’s pledge to avoid extending his term signals a focus on a swift democratic transition. Manna’s call for deeper engagement underscores the need for unity to deliver an election that meets public expectations and restores political stability.

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has ordered the publication of notices in two major newspapers to summon ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Chhatra League leader Shakil Alam Bulbul to respond to contempt of court charges.

The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Md Golam Murtoza Majumder, issued the order after considering a petition from Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam.

The notices must be published within seven days in both Bengali and English newspapers, with the next hearing scheduled for June 3.

The tribunal`s action follows the circulation of an online audio clip in which Sheikh Hasina purportedly made a controversial speech claiming that "227 cases have been filed against me, so I have gotten licenses for killing 227 people."

Later, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police conducted a forensic examination of the conversation and confirmed that it was authentic.

A contempt of court complaint was filed against those on the call on April 30, for giving statements in the case arising from the July mass uprising.

The International Crimes Tribunal accepted the complaint and ordered them to submit their response by May 15. But since they did not reply, the accused were ordered to appear before the tribunal on May 25.

"As both Sheikh Hasina and Bulbul failed to appear before the tribunal today, the court has mandated their publication of notices to ensure their appearance and response to the contempt charges by the stipulated deadline."

In a bold move ahead of the upcoming tri-nation tournament in Jordan, Bangladesh women`s national football team head coach Peter Butler has announced a 23-member squad, recalling nine players previously involved in a standoff with management.

However, notable absentees include captain Sabina Khatun, Sanjida Akter and several other SAFF-winning stars; a decision that signals a significant shift in team dynamics ahead of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers.

The announced squad includes nine of the 18 players who had earlier demanded Butler`s removal, a dispute that had temporarily shaken the national camp before intervention by Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF).

Those returning to the fold include prominent names like Rupna Chakma, Maria Manda, Tohura Khatun and both Shamsunnahar Sr. and Jr.

Bangladesh`s left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman has been ruled out of the upcoming series against Pakistan after sustaining a thumb injury during an Indian Premier League (IPL) match.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed the news through an official press release on Sunday.

Mustafizur, who was representing Delhi Capitals in IPL, injured his left thumb while attempting a return catch in match against Punjab Kings. Although he managed to finish his bowling spell, scans later revealed a clip fracture in his thumb.

BCB physio Debashis Chowdhury said, “Mustafiz sustained a clip fracture in his left thumb during his last IPL match. To recover, he will need a period of rest and rehabilitation. Based on our current assessment, he is expected to be out for two to three weeks. We will reassess his condition after two weeks.”

In response to his absence, BCB has called up right-arm pacer Khaled Ahmed as a replacement. Khaled recently impressed in Bangladesh `A` team’s ODI series against New Zealand `A`, earning his spot in senior squad.

The injury is a setback for Bangladesh ahead of Pakistan series, as Mustafizur remains a key component of team`s pace attack.

Two minor cousins tragically drowned after falling into an abandoned pond in Madhyam Bhumirkhil village of Sarafbhata Union under Rangunia upazila on Saturday evening.

The deceased were identified as Anas, 07, son of Mohammad Ilyas, and Yasin Arafat, 05, son of Md. Forkan, both hailed from Saber Sawdagar`s new house on the east side of the Rising School in the village.

Local UP member Md. Didarul Alam confirmed the incident and said the children went missing around 4:30 pm on Saturday and their bodies were recovered from the pond around 8:45 pm.

After the children were rescued from the pond they were taken to the hospital, where the on-duty doctors declared them dead. Their deaths have cast a pall of gloom over the area.

Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin on Sunday urged Maldivian entrepreneurs to invest more in Bangladesh.

"Bangladesh is producing high-quality construction materials. Due to the production of plywood, pipes, tiles and high-quality glass, Bangladesh has now become one of the sources of these products. Maldives can use these products in its infrastructure construction," he said, reports BSS.

The adviser said this while meeting with Maldives High Commissioner to Bangladesh Shiuneen Rasheed at the Secretariat in the city, said a press release.

During the meeting, they discussed in detail the development of bilateral relations and trade growth.

Stating that the increase in bilateral trade will strengthen the economies of both countries, Bashir said Maldives can play a role in creating skilled human resources in this country by providing training.

Shiuneen Rasheed said that there are brotherly relations between Bangladesh and Maldives.

"The increase in bilateral trade will further advance the relations between the two countries," he added.

India’s southern state of Kerala was on high alert Sunday after a Liberian-flagged vessel carrying hazardous cargo sank off its coast, reports Arab News.

The Indian Ministry of Defense said the 184-meter MSC Elsa 3 container ship was en route to Kochi from Vizhinjam on Saturday when it issued a distress call.

All 24 members of the vessel’s crew — which included nationals of Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, and the Philippines — were rescued by the Coast Guard and the Navy.

“The vessel went down with 640 containers, including 13 with hazardous cargo and 12 containing calcium carbide,” the ministry said.

It did not specify what other hazardous substances were onboard, but calcium carbide becomes dangerous on contact with water, producing acetylene gas, which is flammable and explosive.

The vessel was also loaded with more than 84 metric tons of diesel and 367 metric tons of furnace oil.

Diesel and furnace oil are both classified as marine pollutants. They are toxic to marine life and can contaminate coastal ecosystems.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority issued a public warning on Saturday, when the ship started losing containers in the Arabian Sea. The authority’s secretary told reporters that “there is a chance the cargo, including containers and oil, will wash ashore.”

The Indian Coast Guard has deployed spill detection systems.

“ICG aircraft equipped with advanced oil spill mapping technology are conducting aerial assessment of the affected area,” it said. “As of now, no oil spill has been reported.”

What complicates pollution response is strong currents off the coast of Kerala, which, if leakage occurs, may move the spill toward the south, to Alleppey and Kollam districts, Prof. Biju Kumar, dean of the Faculty of Science, University of Kerala, told Arab News.

“These are the best fishing grounds, as far as Kerala is concerned. Any kind of oil spill will have consequences that will affect marine life. The major issue will be the fish fauna,” he said.

“The major threat is polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which are the most toxic component in any oil. They may be absorbed by plankton, which is a major food source for the commercially available fish … The PAH will remain in the water for a longer time. It essentially means that we need long-term monitoring if it happens.”

A Dhaka court on Sunday ordered the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate a case filed against Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration Mokhlesur Rahman and three former chairmen of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for allegedly orchestrating false cases against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman issued the order on Sunday (May 25), after recording the plaintiff`s statement. The case was filed on May 18 by Harun-ur-Rashid.

The other accused are former ACC chairmen Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury, Habibur Rahman, and Abul Hasan Manzur.

According to the complaint, a weekly newspaper published a report on March 17 titled "How ACC’s Former Secretary Mokhles, the Mastermind of the Orphanage Trust Case Against Khaleda Zia, Is Still a Secretary." The plaintiff claimed he became aware of the article while at Rabindra Sarobar in Dhanmondi that evening. The report allegedly exposed a conspiracy that led to political victimization, including imprisonment and false legal proceedings against Khaleda Zia, Tarique Rahman, and others.

The petitioner further stated that these events contributed to the weakening of democratic institutions and led to human rights violations, including enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and fabricated cases during a former authoritarian regime. He identified himself as a victim of this alleged political repression.

The court will determine whether legal action will proceed based on CID’s investigation findings. The plaintiff alleged that the accused conspired and held meetings to fabricate false charges against the BNP leadership, actions which, if proven, are punishable under existing laws.

Engineer Ishraque Hossain, a member of the BNP Chairperson`s Committee on International Affairs, has filed a writ petition with the High Court seeking to take oath as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

The petition was submitted on Sunday to the relevant branch of the High Court on his behalf.

Earlier on Thursday, a separate writ petition seeking an injunction against administering the oath to Ishraque as DSCC mayor was dismissed by the High Court bench of Justice Md Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury.

In its ruling, the court stated that the petitioner lacked the jurisdiction to file the writ. The court also noted that the case, originating from an electoral forum, was improperly brought before the High Court without exhausting the appropriate legal avenues.

On May 14, a resident of Dhaka South, Md. Mamunur Rashid, had filed the initial petition seeking a stay on Ishraque Hossain’s oath-taking and punitive action against the judge of the electoral tribunal who declared Ishraque the mayor. The petition was filed by lawyer Kazi Akbar Ali on behalf of the petitioner.

Ishraque`s new writ now seeks enforcement of the earlier tribunal judgment that declared him the rightful mayor and demands the necessary arrangements for his swearing-in to proceed.

The Police Headquarters has urged to remain vigilant and cautious amid reports of fraudsters impersonating police officers using the names and photographs of real law enforcement personnel.

In a press release issued on Sunday, the Police Headquarters said it has received complaints about fraud rings who are identifying themselves as police officers to deceive and defraud individuals.

Authorities have warned people not to fall victim to such scams and advised verifying the identity of anyone claiming to be a police officer before engaging with them.

"Legal action against these fraudulent groups is going on. Bangladesh Police remains committed to ensuring public safety," the statement said.

The Bangladesh Petrol Pump and Tank Lorry Owners Unity Council has withdrawn its strike getting an assurance from Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) to fulfill their 10-point demands, including setting of the oil sales commission at a minimum of 7 per cent.

The withdrawal decision came after the meeting of the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation on Sunday.

Earlier the strike began at 6AM as per pre-announcement of the council.

As the extraction, transportation and marketing of fuel oil remained suspended across the country, vehicle owners were facing troubles.

The BPC and owners` association held a a meeting soon after the crisis arose. In the meeting, the decision to take steps within 15 days through discussion has been made.

Other demands include keeping lease fees for land from the Roads and Highways Department unchanged and allowing lease renewals of pump-connecting roads upon submission of the prescribed pay order.

Ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha, the government has fixed the price of cow rawhide at Tk 60-65 per square foot in Dhaka and Tk 55-60 outside the capital.

Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin shared this information in a press conference at the Secretariat on Sunday afternoon, May 25.

Besides, the price of goatskins have been set at Tk 22-27 per square foot across the country and that of she-goat at Tk 20-22.

This year, the minimum price of salt-applied cow rawhide has been fixed at Tk 1,150, and but it will be Tk 1,350 in Dhaka.

The full-fledged nationwide strike enforced by officers and employees of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to press home their 4-point day entered second day on Sunday, May 25.

The strike started at all offices of Income Tax, Customs and VAT offices at 9:00am will continue till 5:00pm, keeping the Customs Houses and LC Stations out of its purview.

The officials under the banner of NBR Reform Unity Council threatened to continue their protests until their all demands are met.

Their demands are repealing the ordinance to dissolve the NBR, removal of its chairman, publication of the Revenue Reform Advisory Committee’s recommendations on the NBR website, and ensuring appropriate and sustainable revenue system reforms through review and discussion with all relevant stakeholders.

The NBR Reform Unity Council initiated a strike on April 29 in response to the interim government`s proposed restructuring of the NBR.

Following the initial protests, several hundred officials from tax zones in Dhaka participated in demonstrations at the NBR headquarters.

They met with NBR Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan to express their concerns and urge revisions to the proposed ordinance .

The government proceeded with the reforms officially dissolving the NBR and establishing two separate entities the Revenue Policy Division (RPD) and the Revenue Management Division (RMD) on May 13, 2025 .

This action intensified the unrest among revenue officials who viewed the move as undermining their roles and the integrity of the tax administration system.

They started pen-down strike on May 14 and then suspended it on May 19.

On Wednesday they announced a series of new programmes, including ongoing non-cooperation with the NBR chairman, to press home their demands.

A Dhaka court has sentenced expelled Jubo Mohila League leader Shamima Nur Papia to four years in jail in a money laundering case. The court also fined her Tk 500,000, with an additional three months of imprisonment in default of payment.

Judge Md Monjurul Hossain of Dhaka Special Judge Court-8 delivered the verdict on Sunday (May 25). As Papia was absent during the announcement, the court also issued an arrest warrant against her.

However, the court acquitted her husband and three others due to a lack of evidence. The acquitted individuals are Papia’s husband Mofizur Rahman Sumon, and her associates Sabbir Khandakar, Sheikh Taiba Noor, and Zubair Alam.

On February 22, 2020, Papia and three others were arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport for allegedly carrying counterfeit currency and laundering illegal money. Authorities recovered seven passports, Tk 212,270 in Bangladeshi currency, Tk 25,600 in counterfeit notes, 310 Indian rupees, 420 Sri Lankan rupees, $11,091, and seven mobile phones from their possession.

The next day, on February 23, a raid was conducted at Papia’s house on Indira Road. During the operation, RAB seized a foreign pistol, two magazines, 20 rounds of bullets, five bottles of foreign liquor, Tk 5,841,000 in cash, five passports, three cheques, various foreign currencies, and 10 ATM cards from different banks.

Following these incidents, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police filed drug and arms cases against Papia and her husband. Additionally, a money laundering case was filed at Gulshan Police Station, and a Special Powers Act case was filed at the Airport Police Station over the counterfeit money. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) also filed a case against her for amassing illegal wealth.

On December 27, 2021, CID Inspector Ibrahim Hossain submitted the charge sheet against five individuals, including Papia, in the money laundering case. The trial began on August 21, 2022.

Formal charges have been submitted in the Chankharpul massacre case, in which six people were killed during the July-August mass uprising.

The prosecution filed the charges with the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Sunday. A hearing will now be held to determine whether the charges will be accepted.

Earlier in the day, around 10:30 am, four of the accused were produced before the tribunal.

Confirming the development, Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim said the submission of formal charges marks a significant step forward in the tribunal`s proceedings. He noted that this is the first case related to the July uprising to reach the stage of formal charge submission.

On April 22, the ICT, led by Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mojumder and comprising Justices Md Shafiqul Alam Mahmud and Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury, set May 25 as the date for filing formal charges.

During the April 22 hearing, Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam informed the tribunal that the investigation agency had finalised its report on April 20 and submitted it to the Chief Prosecutor’s Office. He sought four weeks to file the formal charges.

The tribunal granted the request and scheduled May 25 for the submission. The investigation report named eight individuals as accused, all of whom are former members of the police force.

This marks the first case related to the July–August uprising in which the tribunal`s investigation agency has completed and submitted a final report on charges including murder, mass killing, and other crimes against humanity.

The eight accused are: former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman; former Joint Commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty; former Additional Deputy Commissioner of Ramna Zone Shah Alam Md Akhtarul Islam; former Assistant Commissioner of Ramna Zone Mohammad Imrul; former Shahbagh Police Station Inspector Md Arshad Hossain; and constables Md Sujon Hossain, Imaj Hossain, and Md Nasirul Islam. Of these, the last four are currently in custody, while the others remain at large.

The four accused in custody were produced before the tribunal on April 22.

According to the Chief Prosecutor’s Office, it took the investigation agency six months and 13 days to complete the probe. The final report is 90 pages long and includes statements from 79 witnesses. As evidence, it contains 19 videos, two audio recordings, 11 newspaper reports, and six death certificates.

Additionally, a fact-finding report by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on the July massacre has been annexed to the investigation report.

According to the summary of the report, during the uprising, the accused used lethal force against unarmed and peaceful protesters in the Chankharpul area. As a result, Shahriar Khan Anas, Sheikh Mahdi Hasan Zunaid, Md Yakub, Md Rakib Howlader, Md Ismamul Haque, and Manik Mia were shot dead.

The report concludes that the actions of the accused—including the absconding former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman—constitute crimes against humanity, based on preliminary findings.

Officials and employees continued their protest at the Secretariat on Sunday (May 25), demanding the withdrawal of the Public Service (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025.

They began gathering in front of Building No. 6 in the Badamtoli area of the Secretariat from around 9:30 am. By 10:00 am, the premises were packed with demonstrators.

Shortly after 10:00 am, a procession began, led by Md Nurul Islam and Md Mojahidul Islam, president and general secretary, respectively, of a faction of the Bangladesh Secretariat Officers and Employees United Council.

The procession started in front of Building No. 6 and marched past the Cabinet Division, the new building, and the clinic building, ending in front of Building No. 11. After a brief stop there, the demonstrators continued marching around the Secretariat premises.

Officials and employees across all levels have expressed anger over the draft ordinance amending the Public Service Act of 2018. According to the draft, provisions have been included to allow dismissal from service without the opportunity for self-defense in cases of disciplinary breaches, obstruction of duties, unauthorised absence, or incitement to neglect responsibilities.

On May 22, the draft of the Public Service (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, received final approval at a meeting of the Advisory Council. However, four advisers have been assigned to further review the issue.

Officials and employees have declared that their movement will continue until the ordinance is withdrawn. They warned that if the ordinance is not repealed, they will escalate their protest and take stricter action, including potentially bringing Secretariat operations to a standstill.

Earlier, officials and employees from various levels also held protests at the Secretariat on Saturday.

BSS/AFP) - The number of Al-Qaeda members killed in strikes on southern Yemen blamed on the United States increased to nine, a Yemeni security source told AFP on Saturday.

The official in Abyan province, which borders the seat of Yemen`s internationally recognised government in Aden, said the strikes killed nine members of the group including a local leader.

The security official, who earlier said the attack had taken place on Friday evening in north Khabar Al-Maraqsha, added the strikes hit several locations in the mountainous area known to be used by Al-Qaeda.

"I saw five charred bodies at one of the targeted sites, as well as a burned-out car," a local tribesman told AFP, adding others killed in the strikes had been at another location.

Earlier, a second security official, who confirmed an initial toll of five Al Qaeda members killed in the attack, also said that while the names of those killed were unknown, it was believed one of the group`s local leaders was among the dead.

Washington once regarded the group, known as Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), as the militant network`s most dangerous branch.

Born in 2009 from the merger of Al-Qaeda`s Yemeni and Saudi factions, AQAP grew and developed in the chaos of Yemen`s war, which since 2015 has pitted the Iran-backed Huthi rebels against a Saudi-led coalition backing the government.

Earlier this month, the United States agreed a ceasefire with the Huthis, who have controlled large swathes of Yemen for more than a decade, ending weeks of intense American strikes on rebel-held areas of the country.

The Huthis began firing at shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden in November 2023, weeks after the start of the Israel-Hamas war, prompting military strikes by the US and Britain beginning in January 2024.

The conflict in Yemen has caused hundreds of thousands of deaths and triggered one of the world`s worst humanitarian crises, although fighting decreased significantly after a UN-negotiated six-month truce in 2022.

(BSS/AFP) - Malaysia called Sunday for the extension and expansion of a post-earthquake ceasefire in Myanmar due to run out at the end of May, despite ongoing fighting calling into question its effectiveness.

The ruling military junta initially declared a truce in the many-sided civil war after a huge quake late March killed nearly 3,800 and left tens of thousands homeless.

The truce has been extended before, although conflict monitors say fighting has continued, including regular junta airstrikes.

At a meeting of regional foreign ministers on Sunday, Malaysian foreign minister Mohamad Hasan "proposed the extension and expansion of ceasefires beyond the currently affected zones", a statement said.

"We call on the stakeholders in Myanmar to cease hostilities, and to extend and expand the ceasefire, to facilitate the long and difficult path towards recovery, and ease the suffering of the people of Myanmar," Mohamad said in his opening remarks.

Malaysia currently holds the rotating chairmanship of the 10-country Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The bloc has led so far fruitless diplomatic efforts to end Myanmar`s conflict since the junta staged a coup deposing civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021.

ASEAN has struggled to implement a five-point peace plan agreed by all bloc leaders, including the junta, in April 2021.

Junta officials have been barred from ASEAN summits over lack of progress on a peace deal.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim met Myanmar`s junta leader Min Aung Hlaing in Bangkok in April and urged him to respect the truce.

The United Nations and independent conflict monitors say the junta has continued its campaign of aerial bombardment despite the armistice.

In mid-May witnesses said a junta airstrike hit a school near the quake`s epicentre in Sagaing region, killing 22 people, including 20 children.

Numerous anti-coup and ethnic armed groups have made their own pledges to pause hostilities.

However some residents in eastern Myanmar said they have been displaced as anti-coup forces besieged junta-held towns on a lucrative trade route towards neighbouring Thailand.

Myanmar`s junta has announced plans to hold an election around the end of the year.

But Myanmar`s opposition "National Unity Government" has urged the public and political parties to boycott any poll organised by the military government.

Anwar said after his April meeting with junta chief Min Aung Hlaing that ASEAN had expressed "concern" and wanted to slowly build consensus to ensure "fair and free elections" -- something analysts have said will be difficult if not impossible to achieve.

(BSS/AFP) - A Syrian government delegation visited a notorious camp in the Kurdish-administered northeast that hosts families of suspected Islamic State group jihadists, the new authorities` first visit, both sides said Saturday.

Kurdish-run camps and prisons in the northeast hold tens of thousands of people, many with alleged or perceived links to the Islamic State group, more than five years after IS`s territorial defeat in Syria.

Kurdish administration official Sheikhmous Ahmed said "a tripartite meeting was held on Saturday in the Al-Hol camp" that included a government delegation, another from the US-led international coalition fighting IS, and Kurdish administration members.

Al-Hol is northeast Syria`s largest camp, housing some 37,000 people from dozens of countries, including 14,500 Iraqis, in dire conditions.

Discussions involved "establishing a mechanism for removing Syrian families from Al-Hol camp", Ahmed said.

The visit comes more than two months after interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Mazloum Abdi, head of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, agreed to integrate the Kurds` civil and military institutions into the national government.

The deal also involved guaranteeing the return of all Syrians to their home towns and villages.

No progress has yet been reported on the administration`s integration into the new government, led since December by Islamist authorities after the ouster of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad.

In Damascus, interior ministry spokesperson Noureddine al-Baba told reporters Al-Hol is "part of the agreement" signed by Sharaa and Abdi.

He said the issue requires "a comprehensive societal solution for the families who are victims" of IS.

In February, the Kurdish administration said that in coordination with the United Nations, it aimed to empty camps in the northeast of thousands of displaced Syrians and Iraqi refugees, including suspected relatives of jihadists, by the end of the year.

Al-Hol includes a high-security section for families of foreign IS fighters.

Ahmed said the fate of those families "is linked to the countries that have nationals (in the camp), and to the international coalition", which supported Kurdish-led forces who fought IS, detaining its fighters and their relatives.

The Kurds have repeatedly called on countries to repatriate their citizens, but foreign governments have allowed home only a trickle, fearing security threats and a domestic political backlash.

It is unclear who will administer prisons holding thousands of IS fighters in the northeast, with Abdi saying in February the new authorities wanted them under Damascus`s control.

A tragic road accident at Purbadhala upazila in Netrokona district has left a husband and wife dead and two others injured.

The accident occurred on Saturday evening (May 24) in Pabai Shekpara area on the Shyamganj-Birishiri regional highway.

The dead have been identified as Nizam Uddin, 54, from Chhoshaura village under the upazila, and his wife Rokeya Begum, 42.

According to eyewitnesses and police, around 7:00 PM, four people, including the driver of the battery-operated auto-rickshaw, were traveling towards Purbadhala. Upon reaching that area, the auto-rickshaw collided head-on with an oncoming covered van. Nizam Uddin and Rokeya died on the spot and two others were injured.

Family sources said that Nizam Uddin was driving the auto-rickshaw himself, with his wife, daughter, and his daughter’s maternal uncle. They had gone to visit a prospective bride for his son at Fazilpur Bazar and were returning home when the fatal accident occurred.

Purbadhala Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Nurul Alam confirmed the matter and said, “The driver and helper of the covered van are currently in police custody. Legal action will be taken following a proper investigation.”

Two people were killed in a motorcycle accident in Dhaka`s Banani on Sunday morning.

The accident occurred around 9:30 AM on Banani flyover.

The identities of the dead have not yet been confirmed.

Duty officer Lima Khatun from Fire Service and Civil Defence media cell confirmed the matter. She stated, “We recovered the two bodies after being informed. However, their identities are still unknown. The cause of the accident is also yet to be determined.”

Further investigation is underway to ascertain the details surrounding the accident, she added.

Yu, in her striking "doggy" swim cap, rounded off a sensational China national swimming championships in Shenzhen by winning the women`s 400m individual medley by almost two seconds on Saturday.

Roared on by packed crowds in the southern city which borders Hong Kong, Yu crushed a quality field in a lifetime best 4min 35.53sec.

Yu`s time was comfortably inside the world qualifying standard of 4:43.06, the fifth fastest time of the year and would have been good enough for fourth place at the Paris Olympics.

Second was Chang Mohan, who touched more than a body length adrift in 4:37.33, followed by Li Bingjie in 4:38.66.

It came just a few days after the 12-year-old`s 200m butterfly gold in a scarcely believable 2:06.83, also fifth fastest in the world this year and another time that would have garnered a fourth place in Paris.

(BSS/AFP) - Russian strikes killed four people overnight in Ukraine`s western Khmelnytskyi region, the deputy head of the regional military administration said Sunday.

"Last night, the Khmelnytskyi region came under hostile Russian fire, which resulted in the destruction of civilian infrastructure... Unfortunately, four people were killed," Sergiy Tyurin said in a Telegram post, adding that five people had also been wounded.

Born on May 24, 1899 (11th Jaishtha, 1306 Bangla year) in Churulia village of Asansol in West Bengal’s Bardhaman district, Nazrul rose to prominence as a poet of rebellion and love, challenging colonial oppression, religious extremism, and social injustice through his fearless writing.

Although Nazrul was declared the National Poet of Bangladesh on May 24, 1972, the day he arrived in the country, this year marks the first state-recognised celebration of his birth anniversary following the Interim Government’s formal gazette notification on January 2, officially recognising him as the National Poet.

The Ministry of Cultural Affairs, in collaboration with Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) and district administrations, has arranged a series of nationwide events including in Dhaka and Cumilla.

The national-level celebration will begin on May 25 with a three-day programme in Cumilla, under the theme “Legacy of Kazi Nazrul in the 2024 People`s Uprising,” highlighting the poet’s enduring influence in the struggle for justice.

The inaugural ceremony at Cumilla District Shilpakala Academy will feature Cultural Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki as the chief guest, with Secretary Md Mofidur Rahman presiding.

Md Latiful Islam Shibli, Executive Director of the Kazi Nazrul Islam Institute, and the poet’s granddaughter Khilkhil Kazi, chairperson of the Trustee Board, will join as special guests.

Educationist Professor Salimullah Khan will deliver a commemorative speech while Cumilla DC Md Amirul Kaisar will give the welcome remarks.

The event will also include the presentation of the Nazrul Award 2023 and 2024 to selected recipients, followed by a cultural performance by BSA titled “Chetona O Jagorone Nazrul” (Nazrul in Spirit and Awakening).

A similar programme will be held in Dhaka at BSA`s National Theatre Hall on May 26 at 6:30 pm.

Nazrul, who joined the British Indian Army in 1917 and later took up literature, journalism, and activism, left behind an extraordinary legacy. He published the influential `Dhumketu` newspaper in 1922 and was sentenced to a year in prison for his poem `Anandamoyeer Agomoney`.

Over a career spanning just 22 years, he composed around 3,000 songs and wrote countless poems, short stories, novels, and essays.

He also directed films, including `Dhruva`, in which he also acted, and composed music for theatre and cinema.

The National Poet passed away on August 29, 1976, at the then PG Hospital in Dhaka. Honouring his wish, he was buried beside the central mosque of Dhaka University.

Dhaka ranked 20th among cities with the worst air quality this morning, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 84 at 9:30 am. According to the AQI scale, this level is classified as ‘moderate unhealthy,’ indicating a light health threat, particularly for sensitive individuals.

In comparison, the city experienced significantly worse air quality yesterday, recording an AQI of 152, which falls under the ‘unhealthy’ category.

The only missing piece in PSG’s trophy cabinet remains the UEFA Champions League. That could change next Saturday when they face Inter Milan in the final in Munich. PSG’s only previous appearance in a Champions League final ended in defeat to Bayern Munich in the pandemic-hit 2020 edition.

Saturday’s final was one-sided from the outset, with PSG dominating a Reims side that once stood as a European powerhouse in the 1950s but is now far removed from those glory days. Reims had reached the Champions League final twice in that era, losing both times to Real Madrid, reports AFP.

PSG`s first goal came in the 16th minute when Doué played an angled ball through to Barcola, who slotted it calmly into the bottom corner. Just three minutes later, Doué again found space and squared the ball for Barcola to tap in from close range. Doué, a late inclusion in the starting lineup after Khvitcha Kvaratskhelia reportedly withdrew due to headaches, seized his chance to impress.

Barcola then turned provider in the 45th minute, crossing from the left for Hakimi to volley home, effectively sealing the game by halftime.

The second half saw PSG ease off, with few chances created apart from a strike from Ousmane Dembélé that rattled the crossbar.

Victory puts coach Luis Enrique on the verge of a second continental treble, having achieved his first with Barcelona in 2015. Online Desk : Russian troops advancing slowly on the eastern front of the war in Ukraine have captured two settlements in Donetsk region as well as one in Ukraine`s northern region of Sumy, the Russian Defence Ministry said on Saturday.

Since their failed advance on the capital Kyiv in the first weeks of the war, Russian forces have focused on capturing the Donbas in the east, made up of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

In recent months, Moscow has also tried to advance in Sumy region, particularly after Russia`s military said it had ousted Ukrainian troops from the Russian border region of Kursk.

A Russian Defence Ministry statement said its forces had captured the village of Stupochky in Donetsk region, east of Kostiantynivka, a town under recent Russian pressure.

It also said it had taken control of Otradne, a village further west along the 1,000-km front and announced the capture of Loknya, a village inside the Russian border in Sumy region.

The general staff of Ukraine`s military acknowledged no such losses, referring to Otradne as one of several towns where Ukrainian troops had halted 18 frontline Russian attacks. It referred to Stupochky earlier this week as part of an area under Russian attack.

For months, Ukraine has reported attempts by Russian forces to occupy areas of Sumy region, but has never acknowledged the capture of any of them.

Reuters could not independently verify battlefield accounts from either side.

Ukraine`s popular DeepState military blog, which uses open source reports, said Russian forces had for the first time "been able to take up positions" along a line of border villages.

Russia`s Defence Ministry on Friday announced the capture of Radkivka, a village outside the northeastern city of Kupiansk, which has been under pressure for months.

On Saturday, Kupiansk Mayor Andrii Besedin said the attacks were taking a toll, including two city workers killed on Friday.

"We are seeing awful losses among our people, our colleagues who give their lives so the city can go on living," Besedin told national television. "Sadly, as of now, the city is 90% destroyed."
